How to Choose the Right Finish for Your Hardware

“Which finish should I get?” is the most common question we hear in the showroom — and for good reason. The finish is what you actually see and touch every day, and the same pull or lever can look completely different in brushed brass versus matte black.
Start with what you already have
Hardware doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Look at the fixed elements in the space: your faucet, light fixtures, appliances, and cabinet color. You don’t need everything to match perfectly, but the finishes should feel like they belong to the same family.
- Warm metals — polished brass, unlacquered brass, oil-rubbed bronze — pair naturally with wood tones, warm whites, and traditional cabinetry.
- Cool metals — satin nickel, polished chrome, stainless steel — sit comfortably alongside gray tones, white kitchens, and contemporary fixtures.
- Matte black works almost anywhere, and it’s a great way to add contrast to light-colored doors and cabinets.
Mixing finishes is fine — do it on purpose
A common rule of thumb: pick one dominant finish and one accent. For example, satin nickel cabinet pulls with a polished brass faucet, or matte black door hardware with chrome bath accessories. What you want to avoid is three or four competing finishes in the same sightline.
Understand the difference between living and lacquered finishes
Some finishes are designed to change over time. Unlacquered brass (sometimes called “living brass”) develops a patina as it’s touched and ages — many people consider that the whole point. Lacquered and PVD finishes, by contrast, are sealed to hold their look. A number of our manufacturers even back their finishes with lifetime warranties.
There’s no wrong answer here — just know which kind you’re buying. If you love the look of aged brass, buy a living finish. If you want it to look exactly the same in ten years, choose a protected one.
Feel the difference in person
Finish names vary between manufacturers — one brand’s “satin brass” is another’s “brushed gold” — and a photo on a screen rarely matches the real thing. That’s why we always suggest touching actual samples before you commit.
